This panel focuses on how various health information exchange networks enable clinical data exchange through the Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement (TEFCA). This panel will first provide an overview of TEFCA, which outlines a common set of principles, terms, and conditions (the “common agreement”)to enable the nationwide exchange of electronic health information across disparate health information networks. The panel will also describe the critical role of the Recognized Coordinating Entity® which is responsible for overseeing the common agreement and qualified health information networks who enable nationwide exchange. The panel will also share insights into the current state of exchange and provider participation in TEFCA, and implications for enabling clinical exchange nationwide. Regional, local and state health information organizations (HIOs) engagement and experiences with TEFCA will also be described.
