The Future of Healthcare Leadership: Navigating AI Impacts, Evaluation, and Clinical Breakthroughs through the Lens of the CxO in the Care Delivery Ecosystem
Abstract Keywords: Leadership and Strategy, Analytical Artificial Intelligence: ML, Digital Pathology, Imaging AI, Predictive Analytics, Governance, Workforce Automation, Communication, and Workflow Efficiency, Clinical Decision Support and Care Pathways, Education and Training, Change Management, Analytics, Registries, and the Digital Command Center
Primary Track: Driving Change at Scale through Effective Leadership and Governance
AMIA AI Discussion Group has been officially launched and will host an inaugural panel during the AMIPLIFY conference in this spotlight session. The rapid integration of AI into healthcare and life sciences is fundamentally transforming the digital workforce, reshaping clinical roles, and driving unprecedented clinical breakthroughs. While generative AI and new clinical algorithms hold immense potential to augment human capabilities, recent findings highlight complex dynamics—such as instances where AI alone outperforms human-AI dyads—raising urgent questions regarding "automation neglect," optimal workflow integration, and clinician readiness.
To safely govern this paradigm shift, health systems are rapidly evolving their executive leadership structures . This includes the emergence of dedicated roles like the Chief Health AI Officer (CHAIO) and Chief AI Officer (CAIO), which must synergize with existing Chief Medical Informatics Officers (CMIOs), Chief Health Informatics Officers (CHIOs), and Chief Data Officers (CDOs) to bridge the divide between technical infrastructure and enterprise strategy.
This panel will examine the critical intersection of these executive roles in managing AI’s impact on the healthcare ecosystem. The panelists will explore how cross-functional leaders collaborate to navigate the evolving division of clinical labor, drive workforce transformations, and scale emerging clinical breakthroughs.
Crucially, the panelists will emphasize continuous, rigorous AI evaluation frameworks spanning technical performance, usability, and real-world health impact to ensure patient outcomes, equity, and safety. Attendees will leave with practical insights and actionable strategies on how health system leaders can foster an AI-ready workforce, mandate responsible algorithmic governance, and successfully translate cutting-edge innovations into measurable improvements in care delivery.
