Abstract Keywords: Generative AI in Clinical Workflow: Ambient Listening, Chart Summarization, Automated Response with LLM, Human Factors and Usability, Clinical Decision Support and Care Pathways
Primary Track: Advancing Wellness for Providers and Community with Consideration of Human Factors
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the way we live, work, and interact with technology. From chatbots that to algorithms that assist in diagnosis, and recommend treatments, AI is becoming deeply embedded in modern life and healthcare. Despite its promise to solve complex problems, one of the most critical aspects of AI development lies not in the technology itself, but in how humans interact and collaborate with it. Nowhere is this more important than in healthcare, where patient safety, provider trust, and clinical efficiency are on the line.
This interactive workshop will explore the fundamentals of AI in healthcare, examine different AI models, identify challenges in human-AI interaction, and highlight human factors testing methods that can be used to evaluate and improve AI systems. Attendees will have a deeper understanding of what makes human-AI interaction complex and how human-centered evaluation and design can be leveraged to optimize patient care, enhance trust, and reduce provider workload burden.
By providing hands-on exercises, participants will not only learn the theoretical concepts but also gain practical experience in evaluating and designing AI systems from a human-centered perspective. The workshop's focus on human factors principles ensures that the content is grounded in best practices for HIT and usability, making it highly relevant and impactful for a wide audience of practitioners and healthcare professionals. The key takeaway will be a shift from viewing AI as a "black box" to understanding how to evaluate and design these systems to improve patient safety, increase trust, and optimize clinical workflows.
