Healthcare is a resource-intensive industry whose significant environmental footprint negatively impacts human and planetary health. With nearly every operational decision having sustainability implications, healthcare workers expect their employers to address the sector's contribution to climate change. Sustainability is fundamentally a data challenge - organizations cannot manage what they cannot measure. Informaticians are uniquely positioned to architect the "nervous system" of healthcare sustainability by bridging the gap between clinical care, operations, and environmental impact. This four-hour, interactive workshop provides a practical guide for health system informaticians to advance stewardship in their organizations. The workshop will cover four key areas: (1) The imperative of stewardship: Framing environmental stewardship as a quality improvement initiative; (2) A menu of interventions: Showcasing case studies of informatics-driven sustainability in clinical operations, supply chain, and virtual care; (3) Measuring what matters: Understanding the role of informatics and tools such as CarbonEMR™ in measuring key performance indicators (KPIs); and (4) Creating a culture of sustainability: Addressing common hurdles and developing an individual "Stewardship Action Plan." Participants will learn to evaluate organizational maturity, design scalable informatics intervention , and quantify the carbon reduction impact of clinical operations. All attendees will receive a free copy of the CarbonEMR™ software tool and connect to a growing community of change agents through the Healthcare Stewardship and Resilience Community of Practice. The target audience includes clinical informaticians, CNIOs, CMIOs, CIOs, and administrators interested in advancing sustainability.
