Presentation Time: 08:00 AM - 10:00 AM
Primary Track: Clinical Research Informatics
Where we live, work, and play have a significant influence on our health, affecting it in both positive and negative ways. The physical and social environment can have a significant impact on health outcomes independent of individual-level factors. Examining place-based social determinants of health such as access to food, housing, air quality, and social support as well as structural determinants including the historical context, governance, policies, and norms that shape local environments can help inform effective public health interventions.
This workshop will provide participants with an introduction to incorporating place-based data into their work. Participants will learn why place matters for health research, where to find data on social and structural determinants of health, how to geocode data, and how to link geocoded data to place-based measures.
An interactive tutorial on Health Atlas (healthatlas.ucsf.edu) will help guide participants through potential sources of place-based data. To learn how to geocode data, participants can bring a dataset with addresses to work with, or our team can provide sample data to geocode. In order for the workshop to run smoothly, participants are asked to bring a laptop with R Studio installed.
