API-Based Integration with EHRs: A National Survey, and a Panel Discussion with ASTP and Digital Health Software Developers
Presentation Type: Panel
Presentation Time: 08:00 AM - 09:15 AM
Abstract Keywords: Data Standards, Interoperability and Health Information Exchange, Policy
Programmatic Theme: Clinical Informatics
As demonstrated by the unprecedented number of artificial intelligence (AI) scribe deployments into clinical practice, the process of integrating 3rd party digital health tools with the electronic health record (EHR) has made substantial progress since the 2022 required implementation of standards-based APIs as the default method for accessing and exchanging patient information. Nevertheless, behind the scenes, vendors experience many ongoing barriers. In this panel, we will learn about obstacles identified in a 2026 national survey conducted by the University of California San Francisco and the ASTP, and we will engage ASTP and digital health vendor leaders in discussion about critical and timely issues pertaining to EHR API-based integration.
