Programmatic Theme: Clinical Informatics
Patient-facing digital health tools—such as wearable devices, mobile health apps, patient portals, and virtual care platforms—have become ubiquitous in the healthcare landscape. These tools create new opportunities for patients to access, contribute, and interact with their health data, enabling more informed decision-making and greater shared ownership of care. Additionally, federal government policies emphasizing prevention, healthy lifestyle choices, and technology-enabled care models underscore the importance of ensuring these tools are safe, effective, and responsive to patient needs. Despite the promise of patient-facing tools, many are not designed with meaningful patient involvement, do not align with patients’ daily experiences, or lack mechanisms to measure outcomes that matter most to patients. This workshop will share with researchers, informaticians, clinicians, and developers foundational concepts for designing, implementing, and evaluating patient-facing digital health tools, including those supported by artificial intelligence (AI). Led by a group of experts with deep experience in real-world implementations of patient-centered clinical decision support, the workshop will introduce participants to a lifecycle framework illustrating how to incorporate patient needs throughout tool development; practical strategies for co-designing tools using participatory methods; promising practices for deploying AI-supported applications in transparent, trustworthy ways; lessons learned from real-world pilot implementations; and approaches for evaluating digital tools using patient-centered measures across the health journey. Through interactive discussions and small-group activities, participants will gain hands-on experience applying design, implementation, and measurement frameworks to real-world use cases. By the end of the workshop, attendees will be equipped with practical, evidence-based strategies to advance patient-centered digital health solutions that strengthen trust, improve patient and clinician experiences, and support high-quality care.
