Abstract Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, Clinical Decision Support, Interoperability and Health Information Exchange, Patient Engagement and Preferences, Workflow
Generative AI and machine-learning algorithms have the potential to significantly impact the quality of healthcare and the way care is delivered. These opportunities, however, can only be realized if the AI interventions can be delivered into the optimal clinical workflow or patient life-flow. The AI algorithms also require complete and current data to offer contextually accurate interpretations and guidance. Application-programming interfaces that are based on the widely adopted HL7 FHIR standard can be leveraged by AI interventions to access patient data in real-time, to deliver real-time insights, and to initiate actions for patient care.
During this session, our clinical informaticians and interoperability experts will provide an overview of these standards, how to use them to build workflow solutions, and our real-world insights for working with FHIR APIs of different EHR systems. The applications can incorporate diverse types of data including problems, medications, patient-reported outcomes, data from devices, genomic variants, and social determinants of health. The applications can feature alerts to clinicians, chatbots for patients that use their EHR data, relevant data summaries, risk assessments, and patient-specific recommendations and insights. We will describe how, using these standards, we have created applications ranging from managing perioperative care in the hospital, to harnessing voluminous and complex genomic data for precision medicine in the clinic, to sexually transmitted infections in the emergency department, to remote management of hypertension.
