Informatics research must be broadly used for maximal impact. In this interactive panel, four AHRQ Digital Healthcare Research grantees who are successfully bridging this “last mile” problem will share their experiences and lessons learned. Effective strategies include the publication of paradigm-shifting and actionable manuscripts; the shaping of national regulatory requirements; the incorporation of novel informatics tools into widely adopted EHR systems; and the commercialization of software with demonstrated return on investment. Key enablers include clinical impact-focused funding agencies such as AHRQ and health systems that serve as living laboratories, while challenges include misaligned incentives, a funding landscape still more focused on early-stage discoveries, and limited expertise and resources for commercialization. These panelists and the Director of the AHRQ Digital Healthcare Research Division will share and synthesize these insights while engaging in an interactive discussion with the audience to help the AMIA community strategize on maximizing the impact of its research.
