CMS aims to transition to digital quality measurement by 2030. Electronic clinical quality measures (eCQMs) have the potential to deliver more precise and insightful assessments of the quality of healthcare. However, this remains an emerging area. Our teams at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, University of Alabama at Birmingham, and Penn State Health have collaborated on a series of eCQMs for orthopedics, venous thromboembolism, and cancer. The purpose of this panel is to discuss our collective experiences throughout the development, testing, and endorsement processes. None of the challenges or potential solutions discussed during this panel are specific to the eCQMs developed, but rather serve as case studies to highlight key challenges and explore the broader implications that measure developers and stewards should consider when developing or implementing eCQMs. We will also discuss future directions to improve the development and implementation of eCQMs across the United States.
