Working Group: Climate, Health and Informatics Working Group
Primary Track: Policy
Programmatic Theme: Public Health Informatics
Over the past 50 years, informatics has evolved from a niche field into a cornerstone of modern healthcare, research, and clinical and public health decision-making. However, societal conditions characterized by limited scientific literacy, along with growing frustration and distrust toward both biomedical research and the healthcare system, pose a serious threat to future progress in biomedical informatics. Policies and communication strategies that erode public trust in science, restrict access to critical knowledge sources, diminish current and future scientific capacity, and subordinate science to ideological viewpoints are disrupting“business as usual.” This panel will discuss societal influences on biomedical informatics; how science and academia have contributed to the current tension between acceptance and rejection of science, and how human evolution can help explain it; how researchers can communicate the benefits of science understandably for and with all; and what strategies may help promote evidence-based decision-making in healthcare and society at large.
