Presentation Type: Panel
Strategies for Governance of Electronic Health Record Modification for Research Studies at U.S. Academic Medical Centers
2025 Annual Symposium On Demand
Presentation Time: 03:30 PM - 04:45 PM
Abstract Keywords: Governance, Informatics Implementation, Usability, Interoperability and Health Information Exchange
Primary Track: Applications
Programmatic Theme: Clinical Informatics
In this panel, we present the experience of four academic medical centers that are actively innovating in Epic for academic research. In the current state, electronic health record modification is a necessary part of many types of academic research including clinical trials and digital health innovation. However, modification cannot be pursued without considering operational needs. The era of FHIR brings new complexities, where separating innovation from the EHR is possible, but still relies on EHR-specific processes. The presenters will discuss organizational governance, intake processes, prioritization, safety considerations, ongoing maintenance, and wind-down processes. Audience participation will be elicited, particularly around metrics of success for a governance process. Though this panel will address experiences with Epic, the lessons learned apply to academic medical centers and researchers working with other commercial EHRs.

Lipika Samal, MD
Brigham and Women's Hospital

David Dorr, MD, MS, FACMI, FAMIA, FIAHSI
