Identifying Solutions to Challenges to Artificial Intelligence Deployment in Biomedical Informatics: Insights from the US and Beyond
Presentation Time: 08:30 AM - 11:30 AM
Abstract Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, Global Health, Evaluation
Working Group: Global Health Informatics Working Group
Primary Track: Applications
Programmatic Theme: Public Health Informatics
Artificial Intelligence (AI) offers transformative potential for biomedical informatics by improving diagnostic accuracy, personalizing treatment, and accelerating research. However, its real-world deployment faces significant challenges such as algorithmic bias, data interoperability issues, ethical concerns, and scalability constraints, which may widen health disparities in under-resourced settings. This three-hour interactive workshop, organized by the AMIA Global Health Informatics Working Group, addresses these obstacles from a global perspective. Using the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR), the session draws on experiences from both high-resource and low- and middle-income country (LMIC) settings to explore practical, evidence-based strategies for effective AI integration. The workshop features expert panel presentations, a poster session showcasing ongoing global AI initiatives, small-group breakout discussions, and a plenary session to synthesize findings. Participants will collaboratively identify barriers to AI deployment, discuss stakeholder engagement, and propose adaptable solutions aligned with CFIR domains—including intervention characteristics, external and internal settings, individual factors, and implementation processes. Emphasis is placed on locally led, sustainable, and ethically grounded approaches that promote health equity. By the end of the session, attendees will have co-created a generalizable framework to guide future AI implementations in biomedical informatics, making the workshop invaluable for clinicians, informaticians, researchers, and policymakers alike.
