Presentation Type: Workshop
Developing a Maturity Model for Artificial Intelligence and Indigenous Data
Presentation Time: 08:30 AM - 11:30 AM
Abstract Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, Legal, Ethical, Social and Regulatory Issues, Governance
Working Group: Informatics Maturity Working Group
Primary Track: Applications
Programmatic Theme: Clinical Research Informatics
As institutions, researchers and Tribal organizations seek to develop and adapt AI tools to the needs of Indigenous and other historically marginalized groups, they face a myriad of challenges. Not the least of these is the lack for formal process for designing, evaluating, approving, and monitoring such proposals. This workshop will build on a previous AMIA panel that addressed the interactions and challenge at the interfaces among: Artificial Intelligence (AI); Informatics Ethics; and, Indigenous Data Governance (IDG). The goal of this workshop will be to launch a project to develop a formal maturity model that can be used by both academic institutions and Tribal Nations to evaluate and improve their processes for managing projects in this challenge domain. The workshop team brings together experts in the development of maturity models, AI, IDG, ethics, and translational research processes. The workshop will begin with an overview of the CMMI maturity framework, the unique challenges of working with Indigenous data, and current work in AI Maturity. It will be highly participatory, with breakout sessions to define driving scenarios, developing critical personas; and defining the initial set of maturity model axes. Participants in the workshop will gain both didactic and hand-on experience in developing a maturity model.
