Public Health Data Exchange: Where are we now and what lies ahead?
Presentation Time: 01:45 PM - 03:15 PM
Abstract Keywords: Interoperability and Health Information Exchange, Data Sharing, Surveys and Needs Analysis
Primary Track: Policy
Programmatic Theme: Public Health Informatics
The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted gaps in electronic public health data exchange between health care providers and public health agency (PHA) jurisdictions. Several national initiatives are underway or have been implemented to address these gaps. This panel first describes the current state of public health data exchange, using recent data from nationally representative surveys of health care providers, health information exchange organizations and PHAs. Using these diverse perspectives, this panel shall describe points of consensus related to current challenges as well as progress, and also identify where perspectives diverge. Finally, we shall discuss a set of federal policies and programs that are being implemented to facilitate public health data exchange, including a national trusted exchange framework which has become operational this year, specific standards to support public health data exchange and other efforts focused on ensuring the technical capabilities of data systems used by public health entities. The panel shall highlight how these policies align with identified challenges, and build on progress that has been made.
