Presentation Type: Workshop/Tutorial
REDCap on FHIR: Implementing and Using Clinical Data Interoperability Services
Presentation Time: 01:00 PM - 04:30 PM
Abstract Keywords: Interoperability and Health Information Exchange, Informatics Implementation, Real-World Evidence Generation
Working Group: Clinical Research Informatics Working Group
Primary Track: Applications
Programmatic Theme: Clinical Research Informatics
REDCap is data collection and management software used all around the world for clinical research. One of the most error-prone and inefficient workflows in clinical research is transcribing or downloading and uploading data from electronic health record (EHR) systems into research databases like REDCap. REDCap has a module called Clinical Data Interoperability Services (CDIS) for extracting data from EHR application programming interfaces (APIs) that use the HL7 FHIR standard. Like other features in REDCap, CDIS is designed to enable researchers to find and map the relevant EHR data to REDCap fields without programming experience or knowledge about FHIR. This tutorial will instruct participants on how to get CDIS set up at their institution, how to use CDIS in clinical research, and about innovative use cases for CDIS. This will be a highly interactive tutorial where participants will create REDCap projects that pull synthetic patient data from a simulated EHR system.
