Advancing Public Health Informatics: Setting a National Research Agenda for the Next Decade
Presentation Type: Workshop - Collaborative
Presentation Time: 08:00 AM - 11:30 AM
Abstract Keywords: Public Health, Data Modernization, Population Health
Working Group: Public Health Informatics Working Group
Programmatic Theme: Public Health Informatics
The most recent national research agenda for the sub-discipline of Public Health Informatics (PHI) was last updated at the 2011 AMIA Spring Congress. Subsequently, the COVID-19 pandemic brought a lot of attention to public health and the need to modernize the PH data infrastructure. Given post-pandemic investment in PH data and information infrastructures across the nation, the 2026 AMIA Symposium is an opportune moment to bring together informaticians, public health professionals, policymakers, and clinicians to revisit the past, understand the present, and set a national agenda for the future. This workshop is intended to be interactive and will start with a brief review of past research agendas and recent data modernization efforts. The content will span across various research topics and policy drivers, and it will guide participants towards prioritization and setting of a national research agenda for the next decade. Because of increasing attention to public health over the last year, including policy changes, new data platforms, and shifting agency priorities, this collaborative workshop will be of interest to a wide range of AMIA symposium attendees. Discussions will offer attendees the opportunity to discuss how the AMIA community and researchers should approach the development, implementation, and scalability of public health informatics and information systems in the short and long term.
