Abstract Keywords: Interoperability and Health Information Exchange, Data Standards, Standards
Primary Track: Foundations
Programmatic Theme: Clinical Informatics

The HL7 Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources Specification (FHIR) is a dynamic, evolving standards framework. This tutorial brings the latest information to attendees. The presenters have been involved in FHIR development since its inception and, through their ongoing contributions, possess extensive expertise in FHIR and health information interoperability at HL7. This tutorial builds on the highly regarded Clinicians on FHIR workshop, which has been presented across various venues, highlights current real-world use cases where FHIR in active practice. The tutorial has evolved since its introduction over eight years ago in response to changing interoperability needs and the growing maturity of FHIR and its implementation.

This tutorial aims to educate attendees about HL7 FHIR specification, tools available to access and apply it, and its role in modern healthcare interoperability. Additionally, the session will highlight the integration of FHIR with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and decision support tools to enhance data analysis, decision-making, and predictive capabilities in healthcare settings.

While the tutorial is not a programming or app development course, it will help attendees understand HL7 FHIR’s design and practical applications. Understanding how to represent data as FHIR profiles is a critical step in app development. Attendees will gain hands-on experience with FHIR Resources, the building blocks of FHIR, through using user-friendly online tools. They will also learn how to create a basic FHIR model of data. By the end, attendees will understand how FHIR drives innovation in healthcare and can later pursue formal HL7 FHIR certification.
