Cross-Biobank Studies: Opportunities and Challenges
Presentation Time: 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM
Abstract Keywords: Data Sharing, Privacy and Security, Precision Medicine, Interoperability and Health Information Exchange
Primary Track: Foundations
Programmatic Theme: Clinical Research Informatics
Moderator: Jihoon Kim, PhD
Yale University
The emergence of large-scale biobanks, including both genomic and health-related data from diverse individuals, is transforming the field of biomedicine. Safeguarding these data and protecting the individuals from potential risks are of utmost importance. However, data protection measures often lead to the creation of data silos, hindering the pace of collaborative research. This panel brings together stakeholders with diverse expertise to discuss the future of collaboration and data sharing across biobanks. We will cover a range of topics, including the evolving landscape of privacy and security issues, emerging technological solutions for federated data analysis, the infrastructure and governance needed to support joint usage of biobank resources, and the prospects and hurdles of conducting cross-biobank studies from a research perspective. Our goal is to provide an understanding of the key aspects of biobank data sharing and actionable insights for broadening the value of biobanks beyond the existing boundaries.
