Community and Patient-Driven Health Artificial Intelligence: A Collaborative Workshop on Current State and Future Directions
Presentation Time: 01:00 PM - 04:30 PM
Abstract Keywords: Governance of Artificial Intelligence, Delivering Health Information and Knowledge to the Public, Participatory Approach/Science, Human-computer Interaction, User-centered Design Methods
Working Group: Consumer Health Informatics Working Group
Primary Track: Applications
Programmatic Theme: Consumer Health Informatics
Artificial intelligence (AI) can benefit healthcare by improving diagnosis, treatment, quality, efficient, cost, and personalized care, yet there are many concerns about risk, bias, and potential worsening of health inequities. Human-Centered AI (HCAI) is an emerging discipline that combines research on AI algorithms with user experience design methods to shape technologies that amplify, augment, empower, and enhance human performance. This half-day collaborative workshop aims to better connect the AMIA community with the current landscape of HCAI research and exploration of implications from the perspectives of patients and consumers, researchers, federal agencies, and students entering the field. In this workshop, we will increase the audience’s understanding of the importance of partnering with consumers and patients in the research, development, and application of AI in healthcare and public health. We will provide interdisciplinary perspectives on the ethical, research, evaluation, and social challenges and considerations of AI in current research, community-driven AI, and federal initiatives. Through a dynamic agenda with patient and federal panel discussions, research presentations, student-focused ignite talks, interactive exercises, and plenary discussions, we will explore the exciting realm of HCAI and identify key issues and challenges in the field.
