How informatics can help your health system go carbon-neutral
Presentation Time: 08:30 AM - 12:00 PM
Abstract Keywords: Environmental Health and Climate Informatics, Health Equity, Behavioral Change
Working Group: Climate, Health and Informatics Working Group
Primary Track: Applications
Programmatic Theme: Public Health Informatics
This workshop aims to provide attendees with actionable takeaways that leverage informatics to help their healthcare organizations progress towards carbon-neutrality. Through brief presentations and interactive activities, the audience will learn how to implement steps to achieve informatics-based decarbonization broadly and then dive more specifically in two areas: (1) how to use informatics to drive greener care delivery and (2) how to address the climate footprint of healthcare IT and informatics itself. The workshop will be conducted using an inclusive and participatory design-thinking methodology; this will allow participants to contribute to the improvement of and implementation strategies for existing climate, health, and informatics action plans. Additionally, a large group activity will take place focused on examining, improving, and implementing sustainability measures in specific project areas (e.g. anesthesia, telehealth, etc). Participants will also learn about specific healthcare decarbonization projects underway at Stanford and other organizations that leverage the electronic health record (EHR). By the end of the workshop, participants will have a better understanding of the role informatics can play in creating actionable steps towards healthcare decarbonization. Furthermore, participants will feel more prepared to initiate these informatics-focused decarbonization measures both at their healthcare organizations and within their personal healthcare role.
