Presentation Type: Workshop
Lighting a FHIR Under Clinical Informatics: How FHIR Enables Interoperability
Presentation Time: 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM
Abstract Keywords: Health IT Standards (USCDI, FHIR®, SMART, etc.), Interoperability, Health Information Exchange (HIE)
Primary Track: AI and Care Outcomes
Programmatic Theme: Emerging Technology and Technical Infrastructure
The HL7 Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources Specification (FHIR) is a dynamic, evolving standard. This tutorial brings the latest information to attendees. The presenters have been involved in FHIR development since its inception and, through their ongoing contributions, possess extensive expertise in FHIR and health information interoperability at HL7. This tutorial builds on the well-received Clinicians on FHIR workshop, which has been delivered across various venues, and now highlights current real-world use cases where FHIR is actively deployed in practice. The workshop has evolved over the 8 years since initially presented to reflect the evolving maturity of FHIR and its implementation.
The goal of the tutorial is to educate attendees about HL7 FHIR, the tools available to access and apply it, and the role it plays in modern healthcare interoperability. In addition, the tutorial will explore how Artificial Intelligence (AI) and decision support tools are increasingly being integrated with FHIR to improve data analysis, decision-making, and predictive capabilities in healthcare settings.
The tutorial is not a programming or app development course but an informative session on FHIR’s design and practical applications. After an introduction to the standard, attendees will explore FHIR Resources—the building blocks of FHIR—using user-friendly online tools. They will also learn how to create basic FHIR Profiles tailored to specific use cases and implementation guides. Through hands-on examples, attendees will gain valuable insights into how FHIR can drive innovation and improve healthcare practices within their own organizations. Interested attendees may later pursue a formal HL7 FHIR certification pathway.
Speakers:
Laura Heermann Langford, PhD, RN, FAMIA, FHL7
Veteren's Affairs
Russell Leftwich, MD, FAMIA
